The spatial community has established a new conference—known as spatial@gov®—to address the rapidly increasing demand for information on how spatial capablities can enhance the ability of governments at all levels to develop policies, deliver services and streamline business processes. Basically, efficiencies in government operations and more effective service delivery can be achieved simply by connecting to the 'place' component of government information.
The inaugural spatial@gov® Conference—held in Canberra on 15 and 16 June 2009—was an overwhleming success. The Conference was opened by Senator Kate Lundy (Senator for the Australian Capital Territory). The Hon. Martin Ferguson AM MP (Minister for Resources and Energy and Minister for Tourism) gave the pre-dinner address and His Excellency Mr Zhang Junsai (Chinese Ambassador) gave the opening address at the Conference. The participation rate more than exceeded expectations; attracting 352 Delegates, 67 Presenters, 25 Sponsors and 19 Exhibitors.
