Applying spatial skills in native title: a perspective from an indigenous spatial trainee

Ashley Williams | Spatial Technician, National Native Title Tribunal

I am currently completing an indigenous traineeship program with the National Native Title Tribunal, an Australian Government agency within the Attorney-General's portfolio, completing an 18 month online Diploma of Spatial Information Services (SIS) course through the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT) - which will finish in mid June 2009 - together with being an active team member of the Tribunal's Geospatial Services unit who collectively have mentored me along this valuable journey.

I would like to share with conference participants the skills I have been taught, learnt and applied to date in the context of native title. I'll speak about all of the hurdles that I have had to overcome and also how I could use the skills learnt within an indigenous community or with my own people.

I would like to promote Spatial Information as being of Indigenous Australian decent and the importance to follow a career path. This will be my inaugural /maiden presentation at a conference but look forward to enhancing my learning through participation.
