Nunga Wali Spatial: streamlining the business, improving outcomes for remote communities

Gary Maguire | Online and Spatial Services, Department for Families and Communities (South Australia)

As funding within governments tightens and more complex services are expected by the wider community, it is imperative that available funds are diligently aligned with those areas with the highest demand and need. The Aboriginal Asset Service division of Housing SA is challenged with the task of increasing housing supply, maintaining existing housing, actively removing asbestos in dwellings, and improving housing options for over 70 remote aboriginal communities and settlements spread throughout South Australia.

Through the use of GIS technologies and field collection devices staff now have the ability to record all asset details using standardised forms, a process which is improving work-flow and information accuracy. This information is published via a lightweight GIS web portal to all aboriginal housing staff working anywhere in South Australia. The portal gives staff evidence based information to support Commonwealth funding bids, assist in the delivery of State Strategic Plan targets and improve housing outcomes to the communities.
