Health policy in a spatial context

Narelle Mullan | Project Leader, Spatial Health Demonstrator, Department of Health (Western Australia)

In the field of health, considering space and geography in research or operations is not a new concept. The search for relationships between disease and the various contributing factors has always considered the location of events as part of the study. The challenge today is to ensure that the significant progress in spatial information and technologies is used to its full potential to improve the health of all Australians and to best inform surveillance and service delivery operations.

The Western Australian Department of Health has invested in both the technology and skilled personnel to deliver spatial solutions within the agency. Insights into implementation challenges and recent case studies, which have aided decision-making within the agency, will be provided.

Future plans to collaborate with the CRC for Spatial Information is a key part of the W.A. Department of Health's spatial work program in the future. This presentation will also include key aspects of this exciting new program and how it will link to other national health initiatives.
